Community Forum: Pat Bay & Sayward, this Wednesday!

Saanich South Community Office window
To the Community:

The intersection at Sayward Road on the Pay Bay Highway is one of the most dangerous on Vancouver Island. On average, there are 60 accidents every year.

Hundreds of people have raised this issue with me. People have spoken out clearly about what they want and what they don’t want. And I’ve been working hard to push forward low-cost solutions that will reduce accidents and improve the flow of traffic.
And I think we are almost there!

What are the options on the table?

  • An acceleration lane, northbound from Sayward Road. People leaving Cordova Bay will finally be able to merge safety onto the highway.
  • A deceleration lane for northbound highway traffic heading into Cordova Bay. People will finally be able to safely leave the highway without slowing down the highway traffic.
  • “Congestion ahead” flashing lights south of the intersection to warn drivers when the road is congested.
  • Relocation of the bus stop for the northbound bus to the south side of the intersection. This will help Cordova Bay traffic heading northbound merge more safely.
I want to share maps and more details with you…and get your input to make sure the plans are as good as they can be, and that there is broad-based community support.

That’s why I’ve organized a community forum this Wednesday evening, at the Cordova Bay Community Place – right next to the Elementary School, 5238 Cordova Bay Road.

From 6:30-7:30 we’ll have refreshments and displays showing the tentative plans.
And from 7:30 – 8:30 we’ll have a panel discussion and an open microphone.

I’ll moderate the panel to make sure there is plenty of time for questions and answers, and time for you to share your own perspective.

The panel will be:

  • Judy Brownoff, Saanich Councillor and Council Liasion to the Ministry of Transportation
  • Kirsten Pedersen, Executive Director and District Manager, Vancouver Island District, Ministry of Transportation
  • Graham Shorthill, Community Representative, Cordova Bay
  • James Wadsworth, Senior Transit Planner, BC Transit
With your support, I am confident that we can get this done!

Thank you.
