August 1 - Protection for the "Commons"

These ideas on protecting the commons came from participants in our Servin' up Sustainability event in June. Join the discussion on my Facebook page to comment or add your own ideas.

Protection for the ‘commons’:

The 'commons' must be held and managed in the public interest. The shared public trusts are water, air, fish & wildlife, our parks & protected areas, cultural & intellectual assets, and amenities such as health care, education, public utilities and infrastructure.

In Your Daily Life

· Educate yourself about the importance of biodiversity

· Use parks and public places

· Take down your fence, encourage your neighbours to do the same, create a common centre and common garden and commonalities J - an urban eco-village

In the Community

· Support groups such as Peninsula Streams & Friends of Tod Creek Watershed

· Community gardens

· Reinforce the Saanich Urban/Rural boundaries

Provincial Government Policy

· Socialism is not a bad idea – we share the cost – we should also share the profit

· Ensure protection of public assets (eg. Juan de Fuca lands) is enabled by fair public representation (eg. All CRD members voting); no sales of public lands

· Implement regulations for the use of carbon
